Mercedes Diesels (and maybe gassers) also use an electric water pump to circulate water through the heater before the engine thermostat opens. This way they can warm up the cabin before the coolant in the radiator even begins to pass through the engine. The pumps are very reliable and small. Could be a cheap junkyard item.
