My '63 4/4 1600 needs a muffler. I don't need the rough roar that comes
from the intact exhaust system to convince me that I am in fact driving a
sports car.
The local muffler people here insist no stock after-market can will fit and
informed me that what is presently mounted is only a resonator. (It was
sold to me by the Maryland inspection station because the glasspak on it
was not legal in this state.)
1) Does anyone know of an inexpensive muffler that will fit?
2) Does the 4/4 really use a straight tail pipe that just misses the tire?
Thanks.

Larry,
I just replaced the muffler on my '69 4/4 with 1600 cross-flow engine. The
olde one separated at the rear and to the roar added an interesting banging
sound. I bought the muffler from Penny Bates at Olde World Restorations -
215 947 8720. I don't remember the cost but it was not outrageous. Make
sure she includes the two nuts for the hanger studs as they are, of course,
Whitworth threaded.
My tail pipe is not straight but has zag in it to increase its distance from
the rear tire. I replaced it some time ago when I got the car. Try Penny
for that too.
Hope this helps.
