IF you can do most of the work yourself, restoring the "box of bits" is
probably cost effective. A 12k to 15k budget is lowish but doable, again if
you do most of the labor.
The car when finished (if done well) should be worth in the high 20s. The
"box of bits" is probably not worth very much as-is. The sentimental value
only you can judge.
However, if you have been "wanting to restore it for years," it sounds as
though you will not get around to it "for years."
If you have to have someone else restore it, you should double (or triple)
the 12k to 15k estimate. Then it would be more cost effective. Sell it for
what you can get and buy the best one you can find. You will probably get
it sooner as well.
