I'm telling you, guys, you need to quit fooling around with funny coolants,
thermostat tricks, and "recoring" radiators and get you of of them there
Griffiths aluminum radiators. My 4/4 with a vintage-race-spec engine on it is
a prime candidate for overheating EXCEPT that it has one of these gems on it.
(I took the oil cooler off this summer in the interest of reducing plumbing;
left the remote oil filter on). Even in 95 degree weather (we don't have no
furrin Centigrade degrees here in Virginny), in town, idling between traffic
lights, the 195 degree electric fan will only occasionally come on; most of
the time there is NO fan blowing through the radiator, and it never comes
close to boiling or detonating, even with high (how high? not sure but it sure
makes a lot of power) compression, big cams, etc. In addition, about 1/3 of
the radiator is blocked off by a sheet metal shield (which I've never removed)
that the previous owner put on so the engine wouldn't run too COOL in the
spring and summer. In future, the first thing I'll do with ANY car that acts
like it wants to run hot is to have one of these radiators made for it. What
a difference!!
