None of the Land Rover sourced V-8's were painted in any way until the
4.0, which has intake plenum and valve covers of a different design and
are painted satin black. It would appear from Tony's comment below that
the Rover SD -1 3.5 followed the same practice. Land Rover recommend
spraying this block periodically with Dinitrol (a waxy preservative) to avoid
corrosion.
What would be the point of painting an alloy block anyway since the
alloy dissipates heat better than cast iron? They certainly warm up a lot
quicker too.
It is my understanding that MMC purchased 100 4.0 engines for the U.S.
primarily, and Australia, and any other country requiring On-Board-
Diagnostics II. These have SAGEM engine management, otherwise
known as G.E.M.S. The latest crop of NAS 4.0 engines as of November
are using a Bosch 7-Series engine management computer, and MMC
have not as yet committed to buying any of these. (The 3.9 & 4.6 are
not purchased as complete units, but are built up by an outside vendor.)
The Bosch engine is known as "Thor" due to a newly-designed manifold
by Rover Group which further enhances torque and horsepower.
Rover Group have only committed to build the current engine, I believe,
through 2002, after which a jointly-designed BMW - Rover V-8 is due to
take it's place. Who knows if this engine can even be made to fit into a
Morgan? Comments, anyone?
