the dash, under the scuttle.
In Morgan terms, these were used to reduce the possiblity of side
intrusion in a T bone accident in conjunction with door bars and
reinforced locks. US spec cars got them before European ones.
The spin offs are something else to hang the doors on- bolting through
the hoop and the wood door posts and some more chassis ridgidity, making
the springs work a little more.
As a car used to commute, the added protection from tin-box impact is
also attractive!
