Sounds like a carb problem to me. What carb? Weber downdraught? Check the idle
jets- easy access- make sure they are clean. Replace float needle & seat.
Rebuild kits have all the stuff. Spray a bit of WD40 around the throttle shaft
to check for wear. If engine speeds up- get 'em bushed or replace the carb.
Junkyards are full of replacements- try a Pinto..
SU's. Check the dampers. Look at the jet wells with a flashlight & see if they
are about the same height. Sometimes you can be sooo far off with one that the
car does run & yet does weird things. If that happens, bring 'em up flush,
back 'em down about six flats and start adjusting again.
Check the fuel pressure with a gage.
Vacuum or no- shouldn't cause what you describe. You gotta drive with a bit
more "verve" if no vacuum advance but otherwise there should be no problems.
Do check the dist shaft for play by pushing it around a bit- if point gap
changes any at all- you need to adress it.
Engines are very forgiving about adjustments- you have a problem somewhere in
the system sounds like......
