The "MogLetter" Jan 1998

Welcome to Our New Subscribers.
Over the Christmas period we have had a large number of folks subscribe
to the MogLetter, greeting to all the folks that have joined us for the
first time. The purpose of the MogLetter is to give our existing and
future customers an insight into The Rutter Emporium and The Morgan
World. If you have a Morgan event or anything of interest for the Morgan
Enthusiast, we are quite happy to include your information on our links
pages and within the MogLetter.

Greeting from (MogLoon) at Little Hallingbury
This sub section is devoted to the Rutter approach to motoring. "the guy
that runs the 'dollys hospital' for broken Morgans - never been known to
turn one away"

- It has always been said that "If you own one Morgan you've got to be
half crazy, if you own more than one you've got to be completely round
the bend."
- For those of you that know Le Patron - "where does that leave Melvyn?"

If you have a week of sleepless nights - and keep waking in a cold sweat
sheets all ruffled - the cure is don't be ashamed of your feelings, tell
your wife you are full of lust and passion for another! (She will understand).
"Honey, I've found another Morgan"
Actually we believe that Morgans find people and not the other way around.

New Book

MORGAN SPORTS CARS "The Early Years"

By Jake Alderson & Chris Chapman

Encouraged by Peter Morgan, this book is the product of more than 10
years of dedicated research.

Countless interviews and first hand accounts have helped to tell the
unique story of the Morgan Sports car from it's beginnings up to 1953.

Materials from major collections and private archives have contributed
to the wealth of rare and previously unpublished photographs.
The many successes in motor sport are featured in detail, whether
achieved by works drivers or privateers. The competition history, at
home or across the world, is comprehensively covered through the cars,
the people and events. Much background information is included and
who has a Mog Contact in Brazil please could you pass on their email add
- we would love to find out a little more.

We've had quite a few folks ask about the polished stainless steel wheel
centres, the price under =A340 each and the availability "now in stock -
for Plus 8"

Tech Tip of the Month
        Front End Scuttle Shake
This common Morgan problem sets in at around 45 to 50 mph and scares
the living daylights out of you if you never experienced it before.

Some common causes:

1. Worn kingpins and bushes
2. Damper blades missing or cracked
3. Badly out of balance wheels
4. Loose cross head support rods

When rebuilding the front suspension, it is important to change the following:
Kingpins & Bushes, Damper Blades and Shims, Rebound Springs, Bronze
thrust pads & Auto-lube bolts. If the vehicle has done more than 50K
miles change the front main springs as well.

Winter is Here "A few Pointers (Grandads Tricks)"

- Remember "all" the water based fluids onboard the car can freeze -
especially washer bottles, if you have a glass washer bottle add a
little something to prevent the ice as these are prone to crack when
frozen (en Anglais - "they really take a hiding").

- Adding anti freeze - make sure that you select the correct type for
the engine construction as engines fitted with alloy parts that are in
contact with the coolant need corrosion inhibited "anti Sneeze". Just
because it's got a cast iron head and cylinder block doesn't mean that
the rest cooling system is cast iron. If your vehicle is in storage and
still has the coolant fitted you need to check the density of the "anti
Sneeze" and remember give the engine a good run after installing the
anti freeze so that the thermostat opens and you get full circulation.

- Emergency Check - "Mechanics Finger" - if you need to check that anti
freeze has been fitted an have no means of testing the fluid, one can
dip ones finger in the coolant and just taste a "drop" on the tip of
your tongue. It should taste saccharine sweet. Warning do not drink or
swallow any of the protective coolant mix. (Mind you, the Russian Army
have been drinking the stuff since the last war and they're still
there). This is only a rough indication of the density but at least
tells you if there is some anti freeze content.

- If your Mog is in storage for the winter - jack and block the chassis
so that the load is taken off the tyres. This prevents those nasty
cracks in the tyre wall akin with perishing, the rubber compound under
prolonged static load and vast variation of temperatures gives up. When
getting the vehicle back out of storage (remember to remove the blocks -
can't go far otherwise) check the floor (the car was standing on) for
evidence of leaks. Charging up the road on the first day of summer with
no gearbox oil or a lack any of the other lifebloods is not good for you
or the vehicle.

- Cold Weather Motoring - reduce tyre pressures for more tractive effort!

- Too much go and no Stop - To stop the clutch getting stuck, cut a
length of wood, place it under the clutch pedal, wedge it up against the
chassis cross member, thus allowing the pedal to be either fully or at
least half depressed. By doing this, the clutch disc (centre plate) does
not get stuck to the engine flywheel.

Instrument Restoration
-We have set up our in-house instrument and dashboard service to provide
a faster service, for complete restoration, including lovely cream
Morgan clocks and gauges. We can provide a limited number of Morgan
gauges (restored) on an outright purchase basis. We also cater for other
marques, if you have a Jaguar, MG, Austin Healey or Bentley in your
stable, please contact us, we can be of help.

Morgan Life
Melvyn has written to the magazine editor & creator enquiring as to the
"no show" 2nd edition, but has not received a response yet.
