Okay, I'll bite. For all of us hammer-and-tongs folks, how does one go
about measuring an SU needle? I know the diameter alters the air-fuel
mixture at different throttle openings, but how does one go about
putting that to real world experience? This sounds even more
theoretical than driving about with the roof up!

Making a needle chart from measurements is a good idea. I've done it a number
of times. If you make the measurrements at 1/8th inch intervals, then the
data will match SU needle charts. There are tables of SU needle dimensions
that can be downloaded. I grab a set from the Minispeed web site. They are
in spreadsheet format and it really makes comparison shopping easy.
