I go by "the Grand" theory. Each component costs at least a grand- or
multiples of that...
I try to do what I can myself as I figure that $65.00 (or so) an hour is a
decent moonlight pay. Jobs requiring more skill than I have- or care to spend
time learning, I of course have someone else do. I am paying for their skill
or shop equipment.
I can't imagine having a Morgan restored by someone else, although many do.
Not only am I not in that income bracket to afford such a luxury, but I view
working on cars as entertainment.
My quick guess would be:
body wood- 2 grand delivered (Don Simkins or factory)
assemble body- 2 grand
prep and paint- 2-3 grand
rebuild engine- depends on componants needed but probably 2 grand for great
job
brakes? cheap... 1/2 grand
suspension parts, including shocks, kingpins, bushes, etc- 1 grand
Electric? a cluster gage can run several hundred. If everything is OK & just
rebuild starter, generator & new wires- 1 grand
interior- kit & installed- 1-2 grand
overhaul tranny- (Moss) 1 grand
still have clutch, u-joints, nuts & bolts, windscreen glass & rubber etc etc
1grand
someone you trust to assemble all this- 2-3 grand
You can niggle up and down on any componant, but I'll bet if you keep close
records... That I'm pretty close.
