When I took delivery of Matilda (B1139)as a birthday present to me in
Oct. of '65, she came as a standard Series V. I specifically did not
want wire wheels, due to some previous experiences with a Healy and a
Jag. Also I could not afford a Competition Model. Her engine was a122E
with a single Solex which developed 65 H. P. Competition Models had
116GT or 122GT engines with Webber DCD22 carbs and had 83 H. P. Because
Matilda wanted to be more competitive the mechanics at Sutton and Phlug,
the distributors, were able to bring her up to Competition specs.
4/4 1600 Models were introduced Jan. 68 with the 2737E engines with
either a Zenith or Ford carb and developed 74 H. P. The 1600 Competition
was introduced Jan of 69 chasis no B1799 with a Webber carb and putting
out 95 H. P
Ah, to digress, Matilda cost $2865.00 including T.T.&L. She has always
been very competitive and has outlasted several wives. I use her almost
daily, although we are going through her gearbox now. Fortunately Bob
Noguera has offered to help.
