Most engines are internally balanced. That is, the crank and flywheel are balanced separately. There are exceptions though. From a hazy memory - after all, it has been 20 years since I messed with this - 400 small block Chevys, 454 Chevys and 428 Fords are externally balanced. There are others, but no LBCs as I remember.
