Could be the pinion shaft oil seal, pinion end cover, rack damper or gaiter.
Or indeed a cracked casting in that area. The pinion end cover has a gasket
and this *isn't* critical for thickness. The damper cover uses shims to set
the damper 'weight' and so adding a gasket, especially a compressible one,
will upset this and should not be used. Both covers can be warped by
overtightening and so should be checked for flatness against a straight-edge
and flatted if required.
