Seems to me, that sticking open, it wouldn't have compression and
so it wouldn't get a good complete burn, thus leaving stuff in the
cylinder to
foul the plug. Building up over time.
But I'm just guess.
BTW, great idea on watching the exhaust valve with the timing light.
