There were many different harnesses for different years and different markets.
AFAIK no market required an MGB to have running lights come on with the
ignition. One common problem is incorrect orientation of the fusebox and
incorrect connections to it. The MGB 4-fuse box has a link between one end of
two of the fuses, and this link should be at the top front when fitted to the
car. Connections should be:
Bottom front - browns.
Bottom rear - purples.
2nd up front - whites or white/browns.
2nd up rear - greens
3rd *or* 4th up front - a single red/green.
3rd *&* 4th up rear - two reds each.
Sounds like you have a cross-connection between white or green and red or
red/green.
Haynes only has a common diagram entitled 'Typical later North American'
covering all rubber bumper models whereas the Leyland Workshop Manual and
Bentley have five diagrams supplementaries for this period. Having said that
there *were* large areas of commonality between them, maybe a PO fitted a
harness from something else altogether, if not cooked it up himself.

... The running lights come on when the key is turned
on. Is that correct?? They are on all the time. Were there different
wiring looms for the same year model B??
