I've wondered if this is also the case with cars with ABS, these days the
calipers seem to sit much further out, almost within a bulge in the wheel,
compared to our MGBs. With ABS with one front wheel on dry tarmac and the
other on wet ice (OK, an extreme example), you would get the same unbalanced
braking.
