Oliver,
There's not much you can do with engine in the car and its head in
place except to try a radiator / block cleaning product. They are cheap
enough to be worth a try, though one shouldn't have great hope that they
will do much in the block.
You could use the product, then continue your digging with a stiff
wire, or a 1/4" plumber's snake, or a round wire brush of the sort that
hardware stores sometimes have in the welding department. You won't harm
the engine, but do be careful that you don't get any of the cleaner into
your eyes. Even after the block has been flushed with fresh water, the
crud that you are trying to remove may be wet with residual cleaner. It
stings a lot, in my experience.
