The little black square?  No, it is not an ashtray as some have  
unfortunately suggested (for when I roll the car).  It was in the top  
when  I got it - it is an air vent on a very strong spring - a spring  
that tries to break your thumb or fingers when you try to open it.

Others have suggested AIR BRAKES :-)
