Having changed the door and boot locks on my roadster for a new set I have
an odd key - the original - just for the glovebox. That is on a separate
quick-release ring which I clip onto the main key ring when not in the car,
and can quickly unclip to put in the glovebox lock when in the car. But
having removed the barrel once you should be able to remove the tumblers
from it, and that way *any* key that physically slides in will be able to
turn it. A reduction in security, of course, as a screwdriver etc. will
also be able to undo it, but you can lever the glovebox open with a
screwdriver anyway! Even originally it was hardly convenient, as most
people would have the door and ignition keys on a key-ring, which means you
have to stop the car and remove the keys from the ignition if you want
anything out of the glovebox. Much better is the later arrangement of a
lockable push-button.

I guess there's no hope in hell of finding a glovebox lock barrel to fit
my new key, or a locksmith being able to modify the existing barrel ...
