Greetings to all,
To add a bit to the mail order discussion, I ordered a new radiator from
the folks at Proper MG in early February. The radiator had to be shipped from
England and there a number of delays. It finally arrived on May 31. Was this
there fault? I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt as there parts and
service have been very good in the past. I was mostly disappointed not be able
to drive my car during the spring months of March to May.
Anyway, the new radiator is installed with new cap, hoses, clamps and
thermostat. If now runs hotter than when the old radiator was in the car. I
flushed
out the cooling system before putting it all together. The block drain does
not flow, despite my best efforts to clean out the muck and mire. The
temperature peaks at halfway between N and H (with air temps in the high 70s) ,
which isn't overheating per se but the car now has a tendency to stall after
right hand turns (at more than a walking pace) with a strong fuel smell and
vapor
lock. Let the car cool and it starts well again. It has never done this in
the past. Post hoc ergo propter hoc?
I an concerned that there is not adequate coolant flow to the head. Can air
be trapped in the heater hoses? Is there a best method to purge out trapped
air? Might the water valve be blocked? When I flushed the system, I put the
garden hose into the heater hose near the carbs, left the water valve open,
and
water flowed freely from the water pump outlet. I concluded that the water
valve should be clear and the passages in the head were as clean as i could
get them.
Any suggestions from the list? Try some Water Wetter?
Thanks,
Eric in Florida
