Just as a rebuff to Paul's tirade against people carriers -
Families buy people carriers because they NEED the space - if we didn't
have 3 children my wife would not be driving around in a Citroen
Berlingo glorified van (she'd probably be driving my BGT!). Even the 3
full-size seats in the back of that aren't enough, if one of our
children wants to bring a friend or my mother-in-law comes to visit, so
I've just fitted a couple of flip-up seats in the boot too. Most people
aren't as innovative (or cheapskate) as me, and in a similar situation
would just buy a bigger people-carrier or a 4x4. These things aren't
sexy, fun to drive, cheap, or economical, they are just a necessity for
some people (which, to be cruel, is more than could be said for yours or
my MG!).
I agree that many 4x4s are bought quite unnecessarily. However, I've
yet to see someone come up with a method of penalising people for
exercising their choice to drive a 4x4 that doesn't penalise those (and
there are many living around me here in rural Scotland) who really do
need one. And most 4x4s don't hurt you, me, or the environment much
more than a similar sized people-carrier (although some 4x4 buyers need
neither, it's true).
BTW, your car will never be scraped by my wife's car doors - the best
people-carriers have sliding doors!
And I agree utterly with your first paragraph, about asthma (and climate
change, and whatever else) being used as a cudgel to beat motorists in
ignorance of the evidence!!! ;)
Have a good weekend everyone!
Richard & Sammy
