This is likely a tach problem. The tach on my former 71BGT, later moved
to my 72B, would sometimes peg out briefly when I first turned the
ignition on. I would turn the ignition switch back off and on to get it
to work correctly. I also sometimes got erratic readings on the tach,
including reading high about 1000 rpms, when it was really hot outside.
Otherwise it worked fine but I finally fixed the problem by switching to
another tach.

I have a '70 MGB which resides in the garage most of the time. Just
this
week, I noticed that when I switch on the ignition to start, when the
fuel
pump is clicking away to pressurize the system (I guess) that the tach
is
getting 'bounced'. It will twitch and spin - usually all the way to the
stops. It's not moving in a violent sort of way and it generally stops
before I ever get to the point of engaging the starter.
After the engine starts, I know that the fuel pump runs occassionally,
but I
don't notice any unusual movement of the tach needle. I suspect that
perhaps the 35 year old wiring is beginning to loose some of it's
insulation
integrity. Does this situation sound like anything that has been
observed
by members of the list?
