Top Gear is really just a 'top-shelf' lads mag whereas Fifth Gear (only has
five gates on its gear shift, does that make it a three-wheeler?) at least
tries to maintain a more general interest, which Clarkson would call boring.
The new series of fifth gear has the presenters sitting round a table in the
studio chatting amongst themselves, just like Top Gear since its inception.
The most amusing thing is that they have also copied Top Gear's leader board
of fastest laps, but tried to bring it up to date by entering the data on a
laptop and displaying it on a screen, which takes for ever with Tiff's
unfamiliarity with a keyboard. This week someone had already entered it for
him.
The old Top Gear did a feature on the MGB (they liked it in those days, or
at least Quentin did) with a really neat morph
(http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/images/mgb5.avi) between an old wreck and a
pristine example. More recently there was the Dream Machines restoration
series, featuring the presenter of the even more recent 'MGB is Born'
series.
