My ignition switch is pretty cranky too. Now...Is it possible to lubricate
it with something? I see there is a note in the manual saying DO NOT LUBRICATE
THE STEERING LOCK, but does anyone know why? I was wondering if there was
perhaps some modern lock lubricant that could safely be used today versus what
was available when the manual was written?
Thanks!

I would say it is more likely to be the lock that is causing the problem
than the switch, stiffness or jamming in the lock part possibly being enough
to prevent the spring in the switch from returning itself from the crank
position. Either way, better to do the job once than twice.
Disconnect the battery ground strap before you start unless you have a
multi-way plug joining the switch sub-harness to the main harness, also make
sure the wires in the new sub-harness line up with the old before ripping
out the old. If there isn't a multi-plug make careful note of where the
wires connect to the switch. An on receipt of the new switch check that it
functions correctly both electrically (with a test-lamp) and mechanically
before ripping out the old.
