I just got a great Rosh ha-Shana (Jewish New Year) present from my 70
roadster.
Was driving up the highway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, absent-mindedly
flicked the useless switch on the dash behind the steering wheel, and with a
rather ungraceful and fully unexpected lurch found myself at the same speed
as before, but 1200 rpm quieter - yup, my overdrive kicked in.
I've had the car for 5 years, had the solonoid out for r&r twice, the
pressure valve once, checked all the relevant electrics more times than I
can count, and the O/D has never worked. Not once. Not even a peep.
Then suddenly tonight it decided that it was going to work, flawlessly and
reliably, in 3rd and 4th gear both, exactly as its maker (The Prince of
Darkness himself through his minion Lockheed) intended.
Appropriate payback for the fact that just today 96 RON lead-substitute gas
went up from 5.90 shekel/liter to 6.25 shekel/liter (about 1.36 USD /liter
or 5.15 USD/gallon).
