The charcoal cannister filters the air that passes into the vented
valve cover, then through the engine, out the side covers and back into
the carburettors, and it also traps gasoline vapors that would otherwise
escape to the atmosphere, allowing them to be burned, in theory, when the
engine is running.
If the engine runs better now, it's likely that the charcoal filter is
plugged and that it needs fresh charcoal. The charcoal is WalMart fish
tank material, and a new foam filter can be cut from a piece of
Scotchbrite. A fifteen-minute job to remove, disassemble, clean, cut new
pad, refill and reinstall.
My advice is to get the cannister cleaned up and reinstalled, as there
is no filtering of the air going into the engine's rocker cover without
it.
