Some of you have given me all sorts of assistance on my 'splutter
splutter' problem.
To recap. After driving 165 km (to a regatta) in my MGB GT V8, I had
a major failure with a bolt falling out of the steering knuckle
(resulting in white knuckels!) - also big time rear axle whine -
together with the engine spluttering and slowing, sometimes
stopping. The first one was fixed easily in-situ, the second
resulted in new rear axle bearings which were not replaced by the
idiot shop who installed 3.07 CW&P. That took a few weeks (shops
were all busy!)
But the BIG problem was the splutter. The only clue was that is got
progressively worse as I drove home (165 km) from the regatta. My
'new' garage (immaculate reputation) were stumped. We tried all the
suggestions that you chaps sent me whether they sounded daft or
not. We checked for air locks, engine grounding, thermostat,
reversed water pump etc etc etc. The engine got as hot as hell and
you could not touch the carb ! And the coil was red hot as was the
Lumenition power pack. The Moprod fuel pump only gave -2 lbs
measured on a very expensive gauge spliced into the fuel line. Shop
argued fuel because they said carb needed 5lbs (also the opinion of
RPi who supplied my Rover V8 engine), I argued heat because a poor
pressure of fuel will not result in vast amounts of heat. My
thoughts were that the heat generated was slightly more than could be
dispersed by air circulating in engine bay. This would result in a
steady increase of under bonnet temp until carb got hot enough to
boil the fuel.
As I had missed Terre Haute (Rick - thanks for the T shirt) I was
determined to make it to Bronte - Canada's biggest show. So I
surmised that ceramic coating of the exhaust manifold was called for
because my pipes, although through the wings, are rather large and
have a large heat radiating surface. I found and ace man - aviation
ceramic coater just 75mins away. He did both primaries and
secondaries for a modest Cdn$320 - including extra internal coating
and they were installed. The shop insisted in installing new Moprod
fuel pump which gave 2-5lbs. Every mechanic took it out for a test
run - 6 of them - they all said no problems and SPECTACULAR car! I
drove it home and no problems - SO Bronte here I come!!
Thank you one and all for bearing with me in this laboured birth -
now I just have to finish the interior
Regards
