Oliver,
Well, the car is 32 years old, and all hydraulic components must be
assumed to be that age unless you know for sure about their replacements.
Having faced this clutch and brake question myself, I would rebuild the
clutch master & the clutch slave and replace the rubber hose. It's not
a difficult job to rebuild the two cylinders, and doing both at one time
is the efficient thing to do. If, when you disassemble cylinders, you
find pitting inside, it's easy to telephone Moss and get new parts within
a day or two, and you were going to buy a new rubber hose anyway. This
is one of those jobs which are not much harder to do 100 per cent than to
do 50 per cent. For reassembly onto the car, I've found it easiest to
disconnect battery (you are working in vicinity of starter, which acts as
the buss bar of the vehicle) put the hose onto the clutch cylinder,
cover the open end with a well-attached piece of tape, attach clutch
cylinder, then strip off the tape and attach hose to the tube.
Since you are messing around with some hoses anyway, I would replace
the three brake hoses too, and bleed the system with plenty of new fluid
until it comes out clean and bubble free at the wheel bleeders. Then all
the hoses are known to be good, the fluid is clean and new, and if
trouble develops in one wheel at least it's only one wheel. But this
winter, I would take apart wheel cylinders and inspect/rebuld them. The
master cylinder is a hassle on this model---just leave it alone until you
must fight with the thing. With good luck, it will last for years more,
and with less good luck you can have it rebuilt or buy a new one for far
less than the MC for a Honda.
Bob
