It looks the same as several heater valves I have replaced over the years. I think it is a reaction of the alumium valve and the cast iron head. Eventually, in my experience, the valve just falls apart. I always keep my heater valve open slightly to keep some water flowing through it even in the summer and I replace my valves every 5 years or so just to be safe.
