Measure the voltage on the brown at the alternator and the battery with
another instrument as well as where ever the onboard meter is connected. A
difference in voltage between instruments indicates a bad instrument, a
difference between the three points indicates bad connections at one or more
points. Unless you have a larger than standard electrical load the standard
alternator should be delivering about 14.5v running and at least 12.8v
idling, even with twin electric fans running. You may well find that the
battery is getting enough volts even though wherever the onboard meter is
connected is getting lower. Low voltage all round does indicate a failing
alternator.
