It's more complicated than that. US regulations effect almost
every aspect of car design, from how bright the tail lights are
to how the heater controls are marked to what percentage of the
windshield must be swept by the wipers (which is why the MGB
went to three, even though the improvement was obscured by
the rear view mirror). You literally have to design a car from
the ground up to be sold in the US. It's a terrible, arbitrary,
parasitic regulatory system, and one of the reasons there is
no call for its change is because it protects the companies
that are already doing business in the US from competition,
and the people don't understand what these regulations are
costing them, financially as well as for choice.
