Well, I jumped - I went ahead and called the guy last night, and agreed to
buy the car. I haggled him down to #350 - for that sort of money I can't
really lose, if the whole thing turns out to be not fixable I could break
her for parts to sell on eBay for more than that. But I really wouldn't
like to do that!!!

Kelvin, interesting thought that the outer sill may have been previously
replaced, but not the inner one. My plan now is that I will take a much
closer look at the sills when the car arrives. If I can convince myself
that the outer sill and inner box section really are adequate, I'll buy a
welder and attempt to replace the castle section, and inner membrane if
necessary, myself. Is there some sort of paint/coating I could apply to the
inside surface of the remaining sill sections, while I have it open, to
discourage further rusting?

If the outer sill is inadequate, I'll probably just bite the bullet and pay
a pro to do a pro job - once I've re-assured myself that there isn't any
other BIG money needing spent, i.e. the engine will run OK!
