Heater box

I am trying to mate up a '77-80 MGB centre console to a 70 heater box in my 
70 MGB. - the flap thingy that routes air to windscreen or interior not the 
heat control.  It seems as if the flap movement is much smaller than the 
knob range.  Can anyone tell me what the difference is or am I just not 
doing it right?
