There are 4 different GSM frequencies in use. 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. I don't
remember which is the European std (i think it is 1800 by process of
elimination). Your cell provider can tell you if your phone will work in the
UK, and more importantly what the roaming charges will be, which can be large.
For more than emergency use, one can rent a phone on a short term basis. A
search for "GSM phone rentals UK" will produce some examples.
