Tim,
It's possible that the piston in clutch slave cylinder got pushed into
a previously unused part of the cylinder and got stuck there. The area
not in contact with the rubber cups can become rusty and rough.
You might be able to put pressure on the bleed screw and force the
piston back, but I would expect that the rubber cup will be in need of
replacement.
If this happened while the hose was connected, you could also suspect
that the hose is coming apart internally, acting as a one-way valve.
