Keith,
   A sound something like a grind, followed by nothing is very frequently
caused by a bit of corrosion on a battery terminal. The starter is not
receiving the power it needs to operate properly.  Clean the terminals,
put a bit of electrical grease (or vaseline) on them and reattach cables.
