Hi Dennis,
Yes, you can put the red+ on the starter. On mine, I
used a spare blade on the lower front side of the fuse
box - the white connection - a little more convenient
to reach ;-)

I wouldn't use the engine mount for the black- ,
paint/oil may not give you a good connection. I
clipped mine on to the body of the oil pressure
switch/gauge tee that is fairly near the fuse box.
This item seems to be well grounded and a good
conductor.
