John, don't know if the previous post you refer to was from me or not, but that
is exactly what I have done. I went to a local 'Ace Hardware' and bought a
panel sold for protecting the walls near woodstoves. The item I got has a sheet
metal cover (about 2'x3') over a ~3/8 - 1/2" thick core. I don't know what this
core is made from, but, in this day & age, I doubt it is asbestos... It kinda
reminds me of 'homasote' but is non-flamable.
I peeled off the metal cover (it was just crimped over the edge like a door
skin) and cut the core material to the size/shape to replace the deteriorated
parts on the heat shield for the HS-4 carbs I installed in our '78 MGB. I
attached the material to the metal heat shield usning large head 'pop' rivets
with backing plates against the insulating material.
I can send a picture of the heat shield in situ if you desire. I have plenty of
this material left over (too cheap to throw anything away...). If you pay
postage, lemme know approximately how large a piece you want and I'll send some
your way. I don't have any of the pop rivets left but they, too, were a
standard hardware store item.
(Offer applies to any other listers but John gets first dibs).
