Through what? His unaided ears?? A proper stethoscope??
When a water-pump starts to go out, it usually develops side-play. To
check for this, you have to loosen the water-pump belt and see if
there's any side-play on the pump shaft. If it's not leaking and there's
no side-play, I suggest the sound he is hearing is the cries of a
thirsty wallet.
