I believe that was the purpose, particularly for the one on the
transmission. The speedo to cable right angle drive seem to be less
critical and less common to see in use. I recently tried the direct
connection from cable to transmission trick because I'm too cheap and lazy
to get my right angle drive fixed at Mo-Ma. But there is a good bend to
make so I'm still wary that my cable will wear out quicker as a result. If
so, I'll go back to using the right angle drive.
My earlier note on thefts of the right angle drive - well, that was in a
different era. MGBs were still in production and a popular car on campus.
But when thinking about thefts by fellow "enthusiasts", maybe that wasn't
too far off. Back then, I'm not sure if I would use that term - there were
a lot of short term B owners who decided the car was not for them. We used
to joke that a MGB owner had to either be rich or they had to be a
mechanic. But the needs of the car did wean out those who were not meant to
be enthusiasts. And that was good.
