The inner seal is the most likely culprit, so I think you will have to bite
the bullet. Maybe you can find a local MG Lister who can loan you the
socket. Heck, I will mail you mine if you promise to send it back.

Well, based on the evidence of the PO's MO (chisel marks?), it might be a
good idea to check it out. But if I didn't have any negative indications
(slop, howling, metal chips in the drained oil), I would be inclined to just
put in the new gasket and be done.
