Agreed, there are easier jobs on an MGB, but I have a tip that has provided
considerable savings of curse words:

Remove the old cable completely from the car including the control and knob
from the dash. Then when installing the new one, attach the heater end
first, perhaps lifting the heater box slightly from the car so the end can
be attached to the bottom flap. Then feed the control end of the cable back
through and install the control end into the dash. This makes it far easier
than wrestling with the stiff and unwieldy end and trying to make it go into
the heater flap.
