I can't speak for all tanks, but when I gutted and rebaffled the tank in my
'71GT there was one longitudinal baffle centered in the ribs you speak of,
on the sender side of the tank. This baffle has about a 4" hole in it near
the low point of the tank, but the bottom of the hole is 1" above the
bottom. On the other side is a large cylindrical contraption hanging from
the top of the tank that looks like the end of an air compressor with a two
inch hole in it and vented around the top. It probably holds 4 gallons, and
I would guess it is some manner of baffle, but who knows what they had in
mind here.

If anyone is really dying to see this, I have a digital camera now and I can
try taking pictures of pictures and email them, but I don't have anywhere to
post them.

The main reason it is lighter is because replacement tanks are non baffled
units, while the original has two or three baffles running front to rear.
These basically keep 100 pounds of liquid fun from sloshing around in the
back. See the four groupings of two indentions in the link below? I
believe these are for the baffles. I would be yours does not have any.
