I dropped one once while lifting by the valve cover bolts. When I was
stripping the soon to be V8 I was pulling everything out with less than the
normal amount of care. Something hung up, and rather then investigate, I
yanked on the hoist (laterally out) and I snapped one of the studs off and
dropped the engine and tranny back into the shell. I used the valve cover
bolts without incident for about eight years prior, but that was the last
time. It probably could have been avoided, but it just wasn't that big a
yank to make me feel as though it was entirely my fault.

Especially the bit about the rocker stud snapping and
the engine falling - luckily while it was suspended in
the car. I don't think I will use that method to lift
the lump.
