I lost access to my domain name for nearly two years.  The first company
went out of business and the name went into limbo until the next company
bought them.  They held it for a very high ransom.  I then registered my
site under a ".US" name and waited until my ".COM" expired and picked it
up again.

I have had very good luck with Godaddy.com.  Sounds funny, but they are
easy to work with, know their stuff and are low cost.  They host as
well.
