Most of the guys I talk to who rave about the conversions simply don't
realise that they are NOT saying "The tube conversion is far superior to
the
original" - they are not in any position to know that. What they ARE
saying is "The
new tube conversion beats the heck out of the worn out crap that was on
the
car before".

I'll second Bill's observation. The only significant advantage a shock
conversion would offer me in autocross would be the potential for
adjustable tube shocks. Once the tired old Armstrong's were replaced
with fresh ones, the car handled extremely well. I have played with the
notion of messing around with the shock oil viscosity as a way to
further tweak the suspension (already has uprated valves), but so far,
spring rate and swaybar thickness has offered plenty of room for
improvement. It is clear that there are far more options for suspension
tuning with tube shocks, but absent a situation where one would take
advantage of those capabilities, the so called "upgrade" is pretty
pointless. Heck, most drivers don't really know whether their car
oversteers or understeers, or at what point it occurs. I certainly
never really did until the car was pushed to the absolute limits. For a
road racer that encounters different tracks, the adjustability is a much
more sensible goal.
