This is absolutely correct, but it's even a little
worse than he says. The companies that make these
camera systems and lease them to the various
municipalities and counties actually NEGOTIATE the
length of the yellow light time as part of the
contract they sign with the city. Can you beleive
that?
But it gets STILL WORSE! If the cameras aren't making
enough money, the city is contractually bound to
REDUCE the length of the yellow light in order to spur
more ticking and therefore more revenue. In other
words, the contract often states that the city and the
camera company WILL make a certain amount of money,
come hell or high water. Can you believe that? Think
about what that means! If people aren't running
yellow lights, then the city may be contractually
bound to shorten the yellow light time to FORCE THEM
TO. It's crazy. It's absolutely crazy.
So if you have traffic light cameras in your city,
just "not running red lights" doesn't protect you. If
you obey the law, they'll just keep changing the law
on you until you break it again.
And just in case you're interested, there is
absolutely NO evidence that these cameras spur
enforcement or reduce accidents in place where they
are installed. Quite the opposite, in fact.
I, like many people, find the whole thing absolutely insane.
