At least here in Washington you only need front plates if they were
required in the year the car was new. That requirement has come and
gone and come again in the last few decades. The problem is, most
cops don't seem to pick up on the subtlety of this law, and you
usually have to carry around a copy of the relevant RCW (Revised
Code of Washington) passage to prove it - and hope the good officer
doesn't think you're a smart*ss because of it.
