And air-pump equipped engines usually have a gulp valve to prevent the
unburned combustion by-products from exploding in the exhaust i.e.
backfiring. Under conditions of high inlet manifold vacuum i.e. overrun the
gulp valve allows some of the air from the air pump to be injected into the
inlet manifold to weaken the mixture.
