Stange occurrence as I was driving the 68 BGT out in the hills of Jersey
today. I noticed a slight hesitation when cruising in fourth gear - nothing
major. The car has seen very limited use this summer due to all the rain and
getting ready for a new baby coming, so I chalked it up to being a bit out of
tune,
and figured I'd check out the timing, etc., when I got home.
Then the tachometer started going haywire, bouncing all over. The engine
continued to idle at about 3000 rpm while this was happening. The tachometer
then went dead, and I lost all drive power, no throttle response, nothing.
This
went on for about 10 seconds as I was coasting down a hill and all the while
the engine continued to idle at around 3000 rpm.
Then BAM!!!!! The loudest backfire I had ever heard. The tachometer started
registering again - about 3000 rpm, and drive power resumed.
Needless to say I bee-lined it straight home (without a problem), and parked
her. I haven't had a chance to check out the timing yet, and will try to get
to that during the week.
But the question remains, what happened?!?
